Bosnia and Herzegovina is an upper middle-income country which has accomplished a great deal since the mid-1990s. Today, it is an EU potential candidate country and is now embarking on a new growth model amid a period of slow growth and the global financial crisis.

Bosnia and Herzegovina joined the Partnership for Peace program of NATO in 2006, and signed an agreement on security cooperation in March 2007. The nation began further cooperation with NATO under their Individual Partnership Action Plan in January 2008.

Economically, the country still suffers. Human mobility is constant, and while many Bosnians leave their homeland due to economic insecurity, others arrive. Up to 4000 migrants are currently in Bosnia, many in makeshift shelters outside of formal accommodation and reception centres, exposed to freezing temperatures.
